Financial State Of Minds

FinancialEmpowermentFor Everyone.

We bring practical financial education, coaching, credit support, and capital readiness to youth, adults, entrepreneurs, small businesses, nonprofits, and communities too often left without access. The generosity of our donors and partners covers the cost, so the people, businesses, nonprofits, and communities served through our funded programs receive support at no cost.

Our Nationwide Financial Education Initiative

Impact 100,000 Minds.

We are building a national financial education movement that meets people where they live, learn, work, build, and gather. Our goal is to help 100,000 people use financial knowledge to make stronger decisions, prepare for challenges, pursue opportunity, and create more secure futures.

Our Mission

Expanding Access ToBuild Financial Futures.

We expand access to financial education, coaching, and resources that help people heal from money trauma, build healthier relationships with money, and gain the confidence, knowledge, and support needed to create financial stability, safety, and generational wealth.

Our Vision

Financial LiteracyWithin Everyone’s Reach.

We envision a nation where financial understanding is accessible to everyone, regardless of age, background, income, or circumstance, and where individuals, families, businesses, and communities have the tools and opportunities to save, build credit, access capital, create wealth, and thrive for generations.

How We Help

Financial Knowledge Can TurnEveryday Pressure Into A Practical Plan.

Financial education cannot lower someone’s rent or erase a medical bill. It can help people build a workable budget, start an emergency fund, manage credit, reduce debt, and make the next decision with more clarity.

Our programming, events, and coaching connect the Five Pillars of Finance with business finance and capital readiness, helping people build financial stability at home and in their businesses. That progress can mean less stress, greater household stability, stronger businesses, and more money moving through local communities.

The Financial Reality For Many Across The Nation

Financial Pressure ReachesFar Beyond The Bank Account.

Money stress reaches into physical health, mental health, work, family stability, and the local economy. It shapes whether people can absorb a setback, pursue an opportunity, support a business, or contribute to the places they call home.

Our Four Pillar Impact Commitments

Four Commitments ForStronger Financial Futures.

Our financial education initiatives help young people build money skills early, families establish lasting security, and businesses prepare for growth. Together, these commitments connect individual progress to jobs, ownership, and economic opportunity that can strengthen communities for generations.

The Next Generation

Build practical knowledge early and help young people enter adulthood with confidence and opportunity.

Professionals & Families

Support stability through savings, credit, debt reduction, emergency preparation, and healthier money relationships.

Small Business & Nonprofits

Help entrepreneurs, small and local businesses, nonprofits, and mission based organizations strengthen their finances, improve cash flow, and prepare for capital and lasting growth.

Stronger Communities

Partner across sectors to expand access and create more resilient communities nationwide.

Why Financial Education Matters

Better Financial FoundationsBuild Stronger Communities.

Money knowledge shapes whether a family can absorb an emergency, whether a young person can recognize costly debt, and whether an entrepreneur can prepare for capital before opportunity arrives. Without accessible education, people are left to navigate systems that affect housing, education, employment, ownership, and wealth without a clear map.

We work across the full community because financial wellbeing is connected. When people can budget, save, use credit wisely, reduce debt, begin investing, understand business finances, and prepare for capital, the benefits reach households, workplaces, local businesses, and future generations.

Five Pillars of Finance

Start With Money Areas That Shape Everyday Life.

Budgeting, saving, credit, debt, and investing each affect what your money can do. Financial Foundations™ helps people understand how those areas connect and where to focus next.

Pillar 01

Budgeting

Understand where your money goes and start making more intentional choices.

Pillar 02

Saving

Build stability one step at a time with goals that make sense for real life.

Pillar 03

Credit

Learn what affects credit and how it shapes borrowing, access, and cost.

Pillar 04

Debt

Create a clearer plan for repayment instead of letting balances control the pace.

Pillar 05

Investing

Learn the basics, reduce confusion, and give your money room to grow over time.

Building Greater Access To Financial Knowledge,
Opportunity, & Economic Power.

Financial State Of Minds is a nonprofit financial education and empowerment organization helping individuals and business owners better understand money, strengthen their financial position, and gain access to resources that can help them move forward.

Donations, education funds, and partners who contribute their time and expertise make our funded programs free for the people and businesses we serve.

What We Do

Financial education is most valuable when someone can put it to work.

Through Financial Foundations™ and Capital Access™, FSM supports both sides of financial empowerment: helping people strengthen their personal finances and helping entrepreneurs build financially healthier, better-prepared businesses.

That work is supported by educational programs, digital resources, community partnerships, expert-led learning, and connections to trusted organizations and business resources.

We want someone who encounters FSM to leave with a clearer sense of where they stand, what deserves their attention, and what they can realistically do next.

Why FSM Exists

Money affects far more than a bank balance. It influences where people can live, how families respond to emergencies, which opportunities someone can pursue, whether a business can survive a difficult season, and what people are able to build for the future.

Yet many are expected to save, manage debt, use credit wisely, invest, launch businesses, and pursue capital without ever being given a clear understanding of how those systems work.

FSM exists to make that knowledge easier to access and more useful once people have it.

Darrin Harvey speaking
Meet Our Founder

Darrin Harvey

Founder & Executive Director

Darrin Harvey founded Financial State Of Minds from experience, not theory.

He knows what it feels like to believe you are financially stable and then have life change faster than your finances can keep up. After facing major, unexpected events in his own life, Darrin experienced how quickly emergencies can become debt and how difficult it can be to regain your footing when expenses continue even while everything else has changed.

That period reshaped the way he thought about financial education. Being told to save, manage debt, or use credit responsibly is very different from having the knowledge and preparation to make those decisions when life is actually happening.

Today, Darrin brings his lived experience together with his work as a financial educator, entrepreneur, business advisor, keynote speaker, and host of the Financial State Of Minds podcast. He is also legally blind, which continues to shape FSM's commitment to accessibility and practical education people can actually use.

His long-term vision is to grow Financial State Of Minds into a nationwide platform that helps 100,000 people become better prepared for both the opportunities and the unexpected moments life brings.

Learn with Darrin through his podcast and webinars. Get on Darrin's calendar.

Leadership Team

FSM's leadership team is responsible for turning the mission into the programs, partnerships, resources, technology, and communications that keep the organization moving forward.

Darrin Harvey serves as Founder & Executive Director, alongside Maurice Shabazz, Chief Operating Officer; Damian Coln, Chief Technology Officer; and Troy Sandidge, Chief Marketing Officer.

Each brings a different area of expertise to the organization while sharing responsibility for building FSM in a way that can reach more people without losing sight of why the work exists in the first place.

Board Of Directors

The Board of Directors provides the governance and oversight that help Financial State Of Minds remain accountable to its mission, the communities it serves, and the people and organizations that support its work.

Board members contribute experience and perspective to FSM's long-term direction, financial stewardship, organizational sustainability, and growth.

As the organization expands, that responsibility becomes even more important. The goal is not simply to reach more people, but to build an organization capable of serving them responsibly for years to come.

What Impact Means To Us

Impact might look like someone finally understanding what is affecting their credit, a family creating an emergency savings plan, or a person making their first informed decision about investing.

For a business owner, it might mean getting financial records organized before approaching a lender, understanding how business credit works, improving cash flow, or becoming better prepared to pursue capital.

These changes may begin with one person, but they rarely stay there. Financial habits are shared within households. Knowledge gets passed to children. Stronger businesses create income and opportunity.

Who We Serve

FSM works with people at different stages of life and business.

That may be a student learning about credit before getting their first card, a working professional trying to make better use of their income, a family working through debt, or an entrepreneur trying to understand what their business needs before applying for funding.

We also work closely with the organizations already connected to those communities, including schools, employers, nonprofits, financial institutions, corporations, foundations, and community groups.

Our Partners

Great Partners Help Us Reach Further.

Financial State Of Minds is proud to work alongside mission-driven organizations and professionals who care about financial education, greater access, and stronger communities.

Our partners have committed their time, expertise, platforms, resources, and support to help us create more free and affordable education for individuals, families, businesses, nonprofits, and communities. Their involvement helps FSM reach people beyond our immediate network and bring practical financial education into more places where it can make a difference.

As FSM grows, these partnerships help us expand our reach nationwide through in-person and virtual events, workshops, webinars, resource development, community programming, business support, and other opportunities shaped around the people being served.

We value partners who want to contribute to the mission, not simply be associated with it.

Our Long-Term Goal

Help Us Reach 100,000 Minds

Our long-term goal is to reach 100,000 people. Partners can help bring programming to new audiences. Sponsors can help remove cost as a barrier. Organizations can open doors to the people and businesses they already serve. Donors can help us continue creating resources and expanding access.

Our Programs

Two Programs.
One Mission.

Financial confidence grows when people have support they can put to use at home and in business. Our two programs make that support available at no cost, with donors and partners covering the work.

For individuals and families, that can mean understanding where each paycheck goes, building savings for an unexpected bill, improving credit, or finding a manageable way to pay down debt. Practical education and coaching help turn those concerns into decisions people can act on.

For entrepreneurs and small businesses, it means getting financial records in order, understanding cash flow, and preparing for funding before it is needed. Access to experienced professionals and useful resources helps owners make informed decisions, sustain operations, and pursue opportunities that support their communities.

This program is free for individuals and families. Our education funds and generous donors, businesses, partners, and organizations cover the cost, while contributors share their time, resources, and expertise to help people build stronger financial futures.

A multigenerational family together outdoors.
FSM Financial Foundations Program™

Get Better With Money Before Life Makes You Learn The Hard Way.

Most people are expected to know how to manage money long before anyone has actually taught them how.

FSM Financial Foundations™ helps individuals and families build that knowledge in a practical way. The focus is not on perfection or having everything figured out. It is about understanding what is happening with your money now, making better decisions with it, and building habits that can hold up when life changes.

The program is built around the Five Pillars of Personal Finance: budgeting, savings, debt, credit, and investing. Each one affects the others. A stronger budget can create room to save. Savings can keep an emergency from becoming new debt. Better credit can lower the cost of borrowing. Reducing debt can free up money for longer-term goals. Investing gives that money an opportunity to grow.

Financial Foundations™ helps people see those connections and start working on the areas that matter most for their own lives.

Five Pillars Of Personal Finance

Five Pillars. One Financial Life.

Pillar 1

Activate Budget & Money Management

Understand where your money goes, make realistic spending decisions, and create room for the priorities that matter.

FSM Financial Foundations™ Cohort

Learn It. Apply It To Your Money. Keep Building From There.

The FSM Financial Foundations™ Cohort is for people who want more than information they can read once and forget.

Participants move through the Five Pillars with guided education, practical tools, and support that helps them apply what they are learning to their actual finances. That may mean finally seeing where money is going each month, creating a spending plan that feels realistic, building an emergency fund from whatever starting point is possible, understanding what is affecting a credit profile, or deciding how to approach debt without feeling overwhelmed by all of it at once.

The cohort also introduces investing in a way that helps people understand the basics before feeling pressured to jump into something they do not understand.

By the end, participants should have a clearer picture of their financial life, a better understanding of what deserves their attention, and practical next steps they can continue using after the program ends.

Bring Financial Foundations™ To Your Community

Your Community Deserves
Stronger Financial Foundations™.

Financial education can have a much larger effect when people have access to it through places they already know and trust.

Employers, schools, financial institutions, nonprofits, foundations, and community organizations can sponsor an FSM Financial Foundations™ cohort or help cover participant access for a specific group.

That could mean supporting employees who are dealing with financial stress, helping young adults build healthier habits before costly mistakes happen, giving families access to education they may never have received, or bringing a structured financial learning experience into a community that needs it.

FSM can work with partners to shape the experience around the audience, setting, and goals of the organization.

Learn At Your Own Pace

Start With The Resources
That Make Sense For You.

Not everyone is ready for a cohort, and financial education should not stop there.

FSM also creates resources people can use on their own, including the Financial State Of Minds Podcast, Personal Finance Newsletter, videos, guides, worksheets, and other educational tools covering the same financial topics people deal with every day.

Someone may start with a podcast conversation about credit, use a workbook to understand their spending, watch a video about debt, or subscribe to the newsletter simply because they want to become a little more informed each week. There does not have to be one correct starting point.

Why Financial Foundations™ Matters

A Financial Emergency Should Not Have To Become A Financial Collapse.

For many people, one unexpected expense can undo months or years of progress. A medical issue happens. A job changes. A car breaks down. A family member needs help. Income suddenly drops.

Those moments are difficult enough without also having to learn how money works in the middle of them.

Financial Foundations™ is about helping people build more understanding before that moment arrives and giving them better tools to recover when life does not go according to plan. That means knowing what can realistically be saved, understanding how credit should and should not be used, recognizing when debt is becoming dangerous, and learning how to make choices with a longer view of what those decisions will cost.

The goal is not to make everyone a financial expert. It is to help more people feel equipped to handle their own money with greater confidence and fewer costly surprises.

Start Where You Are

Start With The Next Decision In Front Of You.

You do not need a certain income, credit score, savings balance, or level of financial knowledge to begin. Financial Foundations™ was built for people who want to understand their money better and make the next decision a little more informed than the last one.

FSM Capital Access Program™

Build A Stronger Business.
Get Prepared To Grow & Do More.

Access to capital matters, but funding is only part of the picture.

FSM Capital Access™ helps entrepreneurs, small businesses, early-stage startups, and emerging brands strengthen the financial side of their business so they are better prepared to operate, grow, and pursue new opportunities.

That can mean building business credit, improving cash flow, separating personal and business finances, getting financial records in order, understanding funding requirements, or connecting with tools and resources that make running a business easier.

The goal is not simply to help businesses find money. It is to help them become better prepared to use it well.

How Capital Access™ Works

Three Connected Ways To Strengthen Your Business.

Program Area 01

Credit to Capital™

A guided cohort experience for business owners who want hands-on support strengthening their financial foundation and preparing for capital.

Program Area 02

Money Table Network™

A curated network of trusted tools, companies, financial institutions, service providers, and resources that can help businesses operate more effectively.

Program Area 03

Capital Access Academy™

Ongoing education through workshops, webinars, resources, and expert-led learning for business owners who want to keep building their knowledge.

Business owners may engage with one area or move between them as their needs change.

FSM Credit to Capital™

Get Your Business In A Better Position Before You Apply.

FSM Credit to Capital™ is a cohort-based program that helps entrepreneurs understand and strengthen the financial areas lenders, funders, and business partners are likely to look at.

Participants work through the realities of their own business rather than learning from theory alone. That may include building or improving business credit, separating personal and business finances, organizing accounts and expenses, strengthening cash flow, building reserves, preparing financial records, and understanding what different funding options may require.

The program is designed to help business owners see what is already working, what may be holding them back, and what they can realistically improve next.

By the end of the experience, participants should have a clearer picture of their financial position and a stronger understanding of what becoming capital-ready actually requires.

For Small Business Owners & Nonprofit Leaders

For Business Support Partners

Sponsor Access For Entrepreneurs.

Banks, corporations, foundations, and community organizations can sponsor a full cohort or help cover participant access.

FSM Money Table Network™

More Resources.
Better Connections.
Less Guesswork.

Business owners are constantly being sold tools, services, platforms, and financial products. Figuring out which ones are actually useful can become another job by itself. The FSM Money Table Network™ helps cut through some of that noise by connecting business owners with vetted companies, financial institutions, technology platforms, service providers, specialists, and community partners that can support different parts of running and growing a business.

Depending on the partner, that may include business banking, credit-building tools, accounting and invoicing platforms, funding resources, legal or insurance support, marketing technology, productivity tools, professional services, or special opportunities available to the FSM community. The goal is not to build the largest directory possible. It is to create a useful network of resources that business owners can feel more confident exploring.

Access Better Resources.

FSM works with banks, technology companies, business platforms, corporations, professional service providers, and community organizations that want to support entrepreneurs in a meaningful way.

A partnership might include providing a useful tool or service, extending a special offer to FSM participants, sponsoring access to a program, sharing expertise, or helping create new opportunities for business owners.

We are especially interested in partners that see entrepreneurs as more than potential customers and want to contribute to stronger, more sustainable business communities.

FSM Capital Access Academy™

Keep Learning As Your Business Grows.

There is no point where a business owner suddenly knows everything they need to know. New stages bring new questions about money, operations, customers, technology, risk, leadership, and growth.

FSM Capital Access Academy™ gives entrepreneurs ongoing access to education they can use as those needs change. The Academy includes workshops, webinars, conversations, practical resources, and expert-led sessions covering topics such as business credit, cash flow, banking, accounting, funding readiness, technology, marketing, legal considerations, risk management, and sustainable growth.

Education may come from FSM leaders as well as financial professionals, business specialists, and selected experts within the FSM Money Table Network™. The focus stays practical: give business owners information they can understand and put to work.

Education Through Partnership

Selected network partners may also contribute educational programming to the Academy when their expertise can genuinely benefit business owners. That could mean teaching entrepreneurs how to understand a financial product, use a business platform more effectively, prepare for a funding opportunity, navigate a particular business challenge, or better understand an area of their operations.

Partner-led education should always begin with usefulness, not a sales pitch. When done well, it gives businesses access to specialized knowledge while giving trusted organizations a meaningful way to contribute to the FSM community.

Why This Matters

Stronger BusinessesCreate More Than Revenue.

Small businesses create jobs, generate income, serve neighborhoods, and give people another path toward ownership and economic mobility. But too many businesses are trying to grow while also learning the financial side of entrepreneurship through trial and error. Capital Access™ exists to make that learning curve a little less expensive and a lot more useful. When business owners understand their numbers, build stronger systems, and know what funders are looking for, they can make better decisions before they ever submit an application. And when more businesses are built to last, the impact reaches beyond the owner.

Why This Work Matters

Financial Knowledge
Strengthens Communities.

We expand access to education and support that help people prepare for financial decisions, businesses prepare for opportunity, and communities build greater stability. Donations and partner contributions cover the cost of our funded programs, keeping education and coaching free for participants.

How We Create Change

Our Impact Commitments.

These commitments guide how we build programs, form partnerships, direct resources, and expand access across every stage of community life.

01

Helping The Next Generation Understand & Utilize Money

We equip young people with practical financial knowledge early, helping them understand how money works, build healthy financial habits, avoid harmful financial cycles, and enter adulthood with greater confidence, clarity, and opportunity.

02

Helping Professionals & Families Create Financial Stability

We help individuals and families address money trauma, strengthen their relationship with money, improve savings, reduce debt, build credit, prepare for emergencies, and make informed decisions that create security today and opportunity for future generations.

03

Small Business & Nonprofits

We help entrepreneurs, small and local businesses, nonprofits, and mission based organizations build financial strength. Through financial education, credit knowledge, capital readiness, and strategic resources, we help them improve cash flow, sustain operations, and prepare for growth that supports jobs and the communities they serve.

04

Helping Communities Grow Stronger & More Sustainable

We partner with organizations, financial institutions, schools, businesses, and community leaders to expand access to education and resources that strengthen the financial health of individuals, families, and businesses nationwide.

The Need

Financial Education Should Be Available Before A Decision Becomes A Crisis.

A job changes. A car needs a major repair. A medical bill arrives. A business hits a slow month. Without savings, reliable information, or a clear plan, one difficult moment can create financial consequences that last for years.

Accessible education cannot remove every financial challenge, but it can give people stronger preparation, clearer choices, and greater confidence about what to do next.

Our Goal

Help People Build Knowledge They Can Use.

We connect education with practical tools, coaching, community partnerships, and opportunities to apply what is learned.

Partner With FSM

Our PartnershipsExpand Access ToCreate NationwideCommunity Impact

True financial progress requires education, community support, funding, and trusted expertise. We partner with organizations committed to expanding our mission, programs, initiatives, and events so more people can access financial education, families can build stability, businesses can grow, and communities can create lasting economic opportunity.

Partnerships Built Around Purpose

Build The Reach, Resources & Support Communities Need.

FSM works with corporations, financial institutions, foundations, government agencies, schools, nonprofits, employers, community groups, and subject matter experts to identify the most useful way to serve a specific audience.

Every partnership begins with the people and communities we want to reach. From there, we align shared goals, available resources, and the right program or initiative to create value that can be sustained beyond a single event.

Your funding and contributed expertise help keep our education and coaching programs free for participants. Unrestricted funding gives us the greatest flexibility to expand our programs and deepen our community impact nationwide. We also welcome support for new programs, courses, and offerings that reflect priorities we share with our partners.

Partners can also contribute through employee volunteer teams, technical expertise, products, services, and educational resources. Benefits such as discounts for the people and businesses we serve can extend that support beyond a workshop or program and help our community put more of what they learn into practice.

Ways To Partner

Bring Resources, Reach & Expertise Together.

What do you want to help create for the people you serve? You might help a family get reliable financial guidance, bring a workshop to your employees, or give business owners access to expertise they could not otherwise afford. We can shape your involvement around your team’s strengths, the resources you can share, and the community you want to reach.

Program Sponsorship

Fund a Financial Foundations™ or Capital Access™ cohort, workshop, scholarship, or community learning series.

Community Delivery

Bring financial education to students, employees, members, families, entrepreneurs, or neighborhoods you already serve.

Skills & Volunteers

Contribute subject matter expertise, facilitators, mentors, event support, technology, communications, or operational capacity.

Strategic Initiatives

Develop a local, multi market, or national initiative around financial wellbeing, business readiness, or economic mobility.

The strongest partnerships combine funding, access, expertise, and trusted community relationships. Whether the work begins with one workshop or grows into a nationwide initiative, we focus on creating education and support people can use.

Give your time, experience, or professional skills to help more people understand money, prepare for opportunity, and build stronger futures. Volunteers help us reach youth, families, entrepreneurs, and communities through financial education, small business empowerment, events, and the work that keeps each program moving. Alongside donor funding, your contribution helps keep our educational programs free for participants.

Why Volunteer

Bring What You Know To People Who Can Use It.

People often learn best from someone willing to meet them where they are. A volunteer can make a money lesson feel less intimidating, help an entrepreneur see the next step more clearly, or make sure a community event feels organized and welcoming.

Some roles involve teaching or mentoring. Others rely on outreach, administration, content, technology, or event support. We match volunteers with opportunities based on program needs, experience, availability, screening, and participant safety.
